LITTLER A CLASS ABOVE IN MINEHEAD

Luke Littler thrashed James Wade 11-2 in the final of the UK Open to win his first ranking title since becoming world champion.

‘The Nuke’ made history in January when he became the youngest winner of the PDC World Darts Championship at just 18 years of age.

And the teenager added another major trophy to his growing CV after lifting the UK Open crown for the first time on Sunday night.

Littler averaged 101 and hit nine 180s in a one-sided final against the three-time UK Open champion Wade to land the £110,000 top prize at Butlin’s Minehead.

“This is a tournament I really wanted to win,” said Littler, who posted a staggering tournament average 104.35 across his six matches.

“It’s my third time at the UK Open. I came here as a 16-year-old a couple of years ago, I made the quarter-finals last year, and now I’ve gone three better this year to win it!

“I had a job to do tonight. I just wanted to pick up the trophy, and it’s one that I can tick off the list now!”

Littler opened his campaign with a thrilling 10-9 victory over 2017 champion Peter Wright on Friday night, before picking up wins over Jermaine Wattimena and Krzysztof Ratajski on Saturday to progress to the final day.

The reigning world champion’s run continued on Sunday with 107 and 106 averages in victories against Gian van Veen and Jonny Clayton, before easing past Wade in the final.

Wade’s run to a fourth UK Open final saw him produce some nerveless displays, as he came through a deciding-leg classic against the world number one Luke Humphries in the last eight.

OWEN STUNS VAN GERWEN

Robert Owen produced one of the shocks at this year’s UK Open with a 10-8 victory against the world number three Michael van Gerwen.

‘Stack Attack’ recently enjoyed a run to the last 16 at the PDC World Darts Championship which had helped him save his PDC tour card status.

The Welshman reached the semi-finals of the UK Open back in 2018 when the tournament was infamously played behind closed doors due to the bad weather.

Owen wrote more headlines with a win against the three-time UK Open champion van Gerwen in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon.

The world number 59 punished a below-par display of finishing from van Gerwen, who was 8/34 on the doubles, to win 10-8 and continue his climb up the rankings.

GREAVES MAKES MORE HISTORY

Beau Greaves enjoyed a debut to remember at the UK Open after reaching the fourth round in her first appearance in Minehead.

The reigning three-time WDF women’s world champion claimed wins against Stefan Bellmont, Rhys Griffin and Mickey Mansell on Friday afternoon to put her name in the hat for the fourth round draw.

The 21-year-old became the third female player to win a match at the UK Open, following in the footsteps of Deta Hedman and Lisa Ashton, but the first to win three matches and reach the last 64 of the tournament.

Greaves was drawn to play the world number one Luke Humphries in the fourth round on Friday night and gave the former PDC world champion a stern test on the main stage.

The Challenge Tour and Development Tour Order of Merit leader led their clash 7-5, before Humphries reeled off five straight legs to run out a 10-7 winner.

“Beau belongs in big time darts,” Humphries said. “She’s a massive asset to the sport.

“The women’s game is growing massively and Beau has played a big part in that.

“Over the next few years I’m sure I am going to be sharing the stage with Beau a lot more.”
