HUMPHRIES CRUISES TO CZECH OPEN TITLE

Luke Humphries was in relentless form as he picked up the Czech Darts Open title in Prague on Sunday night.

The world number one produced a scintillating run of performances in the Czech capital, averaging over the 100 mark in all five of his matches at the weekend.

The reigning PDC world champion lost just 11 legs during his title-winning campaign, as he recorded a trio of 6-2 wins against Ritchie Edhouse, Gian van Veen and Mike De Decker to advance to the semi-finals.

A blockbuster clash against Luke Littler saw Humphries average 108.56 in a 7-4 win, before he eased past Kim Huybrechts 8-1 in the final to secure a seventh career European Tour title.

“When I beat Gian I felt that spark again, but I still know there’s another level in me, and I believe I can get better,” Humphries said.

“It’s nice to bounce back (from the World Grand Prix), because when you lose in major finals it’s not easy. It does hurt you, so this is a nice way to finish my ProTour season.

“I’m going to come back next year and I’m going to work harder. I’m going to change things and I’m going to win more. That’s my commitment to the game!”

For Huybrechts it was a first European Tour final in seven years and was an unlikely run, with the Belgian having been a late call-up to the tournament following the withdrawal of Rob Cross due to illness.

‘The Hurricane’ defeated Luke Woodhouse, Pavel Drtill, Jermaine Wattimena and Niels Zonneveld to pocket £12,000 in prize money and clinch his place in a 14th consecutive PDC World Darts Championship at the end of the year.

The Czech Darts Open also marked the culmination of the European Tour for this year, with the top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit all qualifying for the European Championship, which starts in Dortmund this Thursday.

VAN LEUVEN AND SHERROCK SEAL ALLY PALLY SPOTS

Noa-Lynn van Leuven and Fallon Sherrock have both secured their places in the PDC World Darts Championship following the conclusion of this year’s Women’s Series.

Van Leuven finished second on the final Order of Merit after winning four titles and reaching three more finals during the season, whilst Sherrock clinched third spot with three titles and three other finals.

Beau Greaves was once again the standout player in the PDC’s women’s circuit, picking up eight titles and reaching seven more finals over the 24-event season.

‘Beau ‘n’ Arrow’ had already qualified for Ally Pally and next month’s Grand Slam of Darts after retaining the Women’s World Matchplay in the summer.

It meant there was two World Championship spots up for grabs via the Women’s Series Order of Merit, whilst the highest finisher after Greaves would also earn a place in the Grand Slam.

On Saturday, van Leuven set a new record for the highest average in a Women’s Series final, averaging 109.64 in a 5-3 win over Greaves to win Event 21, before Greaves saw off Sherrock 5-1 in the Event 22 decider.

The season concluded on Sunday with Events 23 and 24 and saw Sherrock get the better of Mikuru Suzuki 5-2 in the final of the first competition, before a new name was added to the roll of honour when Angela Kirkwood defeated Anastasia Dobromyslova 5-4 in the final of the last event.

Greaves topped the Women’s Series Order of Merit with £24,200, with van Leuven her closest challenger in second on £16,300 which secured her debuts in both the Grand Slam of Darts and PDC World Darts Championship later this year.

ILAGAN THE PREMIER PLAYER IN ASIA

Lourence Ilagan will make his Grand Slam of Darts debut next month after winning the PDC Asian Championship in Manila on Sunday.

The Philippines thrower, who has qualified eight times for the PDC World Darts Championship, defeated Sandro Eric Sosing 7-3 in the final to take home the $15,000 top prize.

The third staging of the Asian Championship saw the continent’s top stars face off with a spot in the Grand Slam up for grabs for the champion.

Along with a Grand Slam place on the line, two spots for Ally Pally were also on the line with Sosing taking one of them for his run to the final at the weekend.

With the champion Ilagan already assured of a World Championship spot via the PDC Asian Tour Order of Merit, Hong Kong’s Lok Yin Lee claimed the final place at Ally Pally as the next-best-placed non-qualified player from the Asian Championship.
